18 city guidesWhat delivery actually adds to a pizza
A worked example on a large two-topping pizza. The menu price is one line on a receipt that has five.
| Line | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Menu price | Large two-topping pizza | $15.99 |
| Delivery fee | Store revenue, not the driver | $4.49 |
| Sales tax | Varies hugely by state and city | $1.64 |
| Tip (18%) | Calculated on the food subtotal | $3.68 |
| Real total | 61% above the menu price | $25.80 |
Illustrative figures. Tax rates, delivery fees and menu pricing all vary by market — verify at official checkout.
Where the time actually goes
A forty-five minute quote is not padding. Here are the four stages between your order and your door.
Order queue
Your order joins whatever is already in the system. Instant when quiet, ten minutes or more at Friday dinner rush.
Make and bake
Two to four minutes of assembly, then six to eight in the conveyor oven. This stage is fixed and cannot be rushed.
Dispatch wait
The hidden stage. Your food is boxed and waiting for a driver to return from a previous run — often ten to fifteen minutes on a busy night.
The drive
Ten to twenty-five minutes, usually as part of a multi-stop loop rather than a dedicated trip to your address.
Five things that genuinely shorten the wait
Order at a different time. The 5pm to 7:30pm window is the worst in every market we track. Mid-afternoon and after 8:30pm are both dramatically quicker — often twenty-five minutes of difference on the same order.
Keep the order simple. Heavy customisation slows the make line and raises the odds of a remake.
Make your address findable. Building colour, a landmark, gate code, where to park. Five minutes saved at the end of a run is real.
Check which store you were assigned. Drive time matters more than map distance, especially where rivers or highways divide a city.
Switch to carryout. Removes the dispatch wait and the drive entirely. Your food is ready in about twelve minutes.
How delivery zones work
Every address belongs to exactly one delivery zone, and you generally cannot choose a different store for delivery even if a closer one exists. Zones are drawn around drive times and store capacity rather than straight-line distance.
This is why two neighbours on opposite sides of a street can occasionally be served by different stores with different quoted times. It is also why an address at the outer edge of a zone gets consistently longer waits — the store is working to the limit of what it can cover.
Carryout has no such restriction. You can collect from any store you are willing to drive to, including one running a better offer than the one you were assigned. More on how zones work here.

Delivery guides for 18 cities
Delivery is a local business, and the advice changes with the city. Sprawl, terrain, tax rates, store density and weather all move the numbers.
- Atlanta, GATraffic is the variable that matters here. When you order in Atlanta affects your wait more than where you order from.
- Austin, TXA young, late-eating city where the campus stores keep the longest hours in Texas. Ordering strategy for Austin, specifically.
- Charlotte, NCFast suburban growth has outpaced store openings in parts of Charlotte. That gap shows up as longer waits in specific ZIP codes.
- Chicago, ILWhat chain pizza costs in Chicago, how delivery windows shift by neighbourhood, and where carryout beats delivery by the widest margin.
- Columbus, OHOur home metro, and one of the most heavily test-marketed pizza cities in America. Here is what that means for the offers you see.
- Dallas, TXDense store coverage across the Metroplex means short delivery times — and unusually aggressive local promotions.
- Denver, COAltitude genuinely affects dough proofing, and Denver stores adjust for it. Plus: why winter storms are the best time to order carryout.
- Detroit, MIThe birthplace of a whole pizza style, and a metro where the chains have to work harder on price than almost anywhere else.
- Houston, TXHouston sprawls, and that changes the delivery maths. Here is how distance, heat and store density affect what you pay and how long you wait.
- Jacksonville, FLThe largest city by land area in the lower 48, which makes delivery radius the single biggest factor in what you pay and how long you wait.
- Las Vegas, NVA genuinely 24-hour food city, with the longest late-night pizza windows in the country — and resort-corridor delivery quirks worth knowing.
- Nashville, TNTourism reshapes demand downtown every weekend. Order from the right side of the river and you will wait half as long.
- Philadelphia, PAA city with strong independent pizzerias on every corner — which quietly keeps chain pricing and promotions more competitive than you might expect.
- Phoenix, AZSummer changes ordering behaviour in Phoenix more than in almost any other metro. What that means for wait times, food quality and price.
- Portland, ORNo sales tax, a serious independent pizza scene, and the highest rate of vegetarian ordering we hear about from readers.
- San Antonio, TXMilitary-heavy, family-heavy and value-conscious. San Antonio is one of the metros where bundle deals move the most volume.
- San Diego, CACalifornia pricing runs high, and San Diego is no exception. Where the gap between carryout and delivery is widest, and how to close it.
- Seattle, WAHigh labour costs and steep hills. Both push Seattle pricing above the national average — but there are ways around it.
