Nobody in Philadelphia will tell you this is an authentic cheesesteak, and that's fine — it isn't trying to be. What it is, is a hot steak-and-cheese sandwich baked in a pizza oven, and judged on those terms it's one of the more satisfying non-pizza items you can order.

The cheese combination is the thing that makes it work. American melts smoothly and evenly, coating everything; provolone brings sharpness and a bit of pull. Using both gives you texture and flavour that either alone would miss. The vegetables — onion, green pepper, mushroom — soften in the oven and release moisture into the steak, which keeps it from drying out.

What to ask for

Extra cheese is the request that improves this most. The standard amount is adequate but the sandwich carries more when there's enough cheese to bind the filling together. A side of marinara for dipping is also a good call, and cheap.

If you don't want peppers or mushrooms, say so — removals are free and the sandwich survives fine without them. Onions are harder to skip; they're doing a lot of the flavour work.

Portion and value

This is a filling item. One sandwich is a genuine meal for most people, and it's one of the more protein-dense things on a pizza menu. As part of a two-item deal alongside a pizza, it feeds two people comfortably.

Calories run high — steak, two cheeses and a substantial roll add up quickly — and sodium likewise. It's not a light choice, though it compares reasonably against a heavily topped pizza of similar size.

The reheat problem

Steak sandwiches don't reheat brilliantly; the meat firms up and the bread never quite recovers. This is one to eat fresh rather than save.

Philly Steak Sandwich: your questions answered

No, and it doesn't claim to be. It's a hot steak-and-cheese sandwich baked in a pizza oven. Judged on its own terms it's a solid item; judged against a Philadelphia original it's a different thing entirely.
